Shipping your Wheels
If you are South African and returning permanently to South Africa you are permitted to import one set of wheels per family duty-free. You must have owned the car for at least a year and you must be able to prove that the car has been fully paid for.
The cheapest method of shipping cars to South Africa is on a Roll on Roll off (RORO) shipping service. The ship is a purpose-built cargo vessel.
Application

You can apply for a letter of authority (LoA1) by either contacting the South African Bureau of Standards or through a car shipping agent.
Import permits can be obtained from ITAC Department of Trade and industry
Documentation required by your customs agent for clearing the car in South Africa
Proof of emigration from South Africa.
Proof of permanent residence abroad.
Registration certificate/permit.
A completed declaration form DA 304 A.
An import permit for used vehicles (which will only be posted to a SA address).
An original Letter of Authority (Loa).
