Madame Zingara, showering the foreshore with magic dust
Zingaras, legend of the Cape restaurant scene, was burned to the ground late last year, leading to the inimitable Richard, that Wizard of Ours, being forced to dig deep into his pockets and his amazing bag of tricks and bring a very different kind of magic to Cape Town.
The antique Belgian circus tent, which Richard has pitched on an ugly concrete underpass in town, is one of only 10 in the world. It is packed to the brim every night with diners gorging on a delicious five course meal and watching a spectacular three-hour extravaganza of music, dance, acrobatics, comedy and, of course, magic.
BacktoSA has heard that, like all good ringmasters, Richard is going to take his show on the road. We are not alone among Capetonians in saying we will follow him wherever he goes, and dream of the day he brings Cape Town's best night home. Next stop Jozi, we are told.
